third root is a central texas hip-hop collaborative that focuses on black and brown overlapping culture and identity. the group consists of charles peters (easy lee), marco cervantes (mexican stepgrandfather), and dj chicken george (djcg). peters is an accomplished poet and educator, cervantes is a producer and ph.d. who teaches at the university of texas at san antonio, and djcg is a world-renowned dj, musicologist, designer & jazztronica! peddler. their latest album, libertad, produced entirely by grammy award winner adrian quesada (grupo fantasma, brownout, echocentrics, spanish gold), reflects today’s current mobilization among black and brown communities in the face of debilitating cycles of police brutality, ?awed educational systems, privately owned prisons and detainment centers, corporately owned politicians, and racist judicial systems. the album delivers a mix of social justice and jam session with each song designed to raise questions, incite discussion, and promote healing and liberation. “reflection of the times” and “soul force” are the leading singles from libertad.

h.takahashi, tokyo based architect and sound designer follows up his revered collection where to be? on where to now? records with raum, a full length lp suite of meditative pulse minimalism. raum draws its cues from a melting pot of closely connected yet wholly individual strands of minimalism - from the japanese minimalist works from the likes of hiroshi yoshimura and satoshi ashikawa, to masters such as erik satie and john cage, and ambient leaders brian eno and roedelius, takahashi soaks this historical influence and rings it out it through a modern filter to create a record of stillness, ethereal beauty, and transcendent energy. takahashi composes all of his music on his iphone, and this is no gimmick, rather a conscious decision which allows takahashi to constantly create on the go without the constraints of space, and for takahashi raum serves as a mediation on the relationship between sound and its environment. for takahashi this creative process feels something like an invisible phenomenon taking over & mutating these constantly changing spaces into abstract sound, creating a brief pseudo space which expresses and highlights the features of the environment for a moment in time.” although perhaps quite an abstract statement of intent, when deeply immersed into takahashi’s pieces this idea of slowly gliding through different architectural spaces is naturally conjured through the gentle repetitive pulse which runs through his work and the playful unstructured tonality of objects which weave around this forward (or upward) motion. raum was created across the city of tokyo, be it a café / park / office / road / platform / subway these pieces explore the power sound holds to emotionally enhance and mutate the listeners environment. the power of the music presented is in that which is barely there, embracing space, silence, and cyclical repetition. the music is to help us function - it s music to work to, to sleep to, to help us find a sense of space and oneness within a world that is increasingly wild and untameable.

karl meier, ken meier and jon krohn, aka stave, are launching a label called standards & practices.
the three us artists, who share chicago roots, have a pretty straightforward mission in mind for standards & practices: “to provide a platform for releases by both talker and stave, as well as for material by other like-minded artists and collaborators.” talker is the downwards-affiliated duo of karl meier—a longtime techno dj, now based in berlin, who took part in ra’s playing favourites series last year—and krohn, formerly of the experimental rock group male, who’s also been putting out his own brand of abstract, industrialized electronic music as stave for around four years. ken meier, a new york-based graphic designer, partner at common name and dj—and karl’s brother—takes care of art and design for the label.
standards & practices’ opening move is a talker 12-inch, battle standards, the duo’s third full release and first since their 2014 album for downwards. a three-track ep built with material from their new live set and “aimed squarely at the dance floor,” it includes a new version of “my favorite colour is gold,” from 2015’s the immortal eye compilation cd. it’s due out in late july. next will be black hills, a five-track ep from stave that’s expected in september.
along with the soon-to-launch label, the meier brothers recently rebooted their fear of music podcast with some new mixes, including two from karl.

first chapter of cassette beat tape series most blunted is a debut from warsaw-based producer and live performer bass jan other (privately an acclaimed visual artist, illustrator and graphic designer jan estrada-osmycki). stylistically, washed by waves varies from dub techno jams to syncopated, jazz-funk-oriented beats with lots of pads, space and random events. technically, the album consists of layers of sculpted synthetic sounds made using a teenage engineering op-1, a yamaha dx7 and digital production. produced in limited run of 100 purple cassettes with risography artwork designed by author himself. each item includes a free digital download code.

eshone (donnie valdez) is a 31 year-old graphic designer, music producer and dubstep dj from albuquerque, new mexico now living in poland. eshone has performed in twenty states and several countries, including: canada, denmark, poland, the netherlands, and slovenia. donnie s earliest musical memories were his electric guitar playing days and listening to heavy-metal bands from twenty-five years ago. learning this instrument and listening to heavy-metal expanded donnie s musical horizons to signal processing and sound manipulation. armed with technical knowledge, donnie shifted his focus to music production in 2004, specifically, drum and bass. eshone makes tunes quickly because of his innovative production techniques and instant application of his craft. his frenetic production pace is closely related to his high-energy live three deck sets. donnie learned how to mix in 2003 and had plans on becoming a turntablist. currently, donnie prefers to mix and blend his productions, which focus on heavy basslines and anthemic grooves while keeping a dark vibe and gritty texture. donnie s love of nature and music gave him incentive to create his record label, elk beats. the elk is very similar to donnie s music, internet presence, and online persona: peaceful, present, and powerful. donnie enjoys spontaneous activities, such as: fly fishing, skateboarding, and snowboarding. his other passion is music, and eshone s productions are custom-made for large rooms with low-lights, loud sound systems, and an intense emotional experience.

impulsive and intuitive hardware house & techno from vancouver duo minimal violence aka ashlee luk & lida p. the five tracks on night gym soundtrack urban landscapes, textured synths, heavy kicks, and dense polyrhythms come together to form the duo s own brand of outsider house. citing influence from both minimal synth and chicago house, night gym arrives hot off the heels of the duo s self titled ep on dublin based first second label which closely examined the intersections that lay between punk and techno. recorded in february/march 2016 in the duo s home studio, the instinctual nature of live work flow plays an important role in the duo s creative process. utilizing hardware (sh-101, tr-606/505/707, waldorf blofeld, juno-60, dx-21, mpc1000) in addition to sourced samples with final compositions compiled and manipulated in ableton, night gym is an example of the duo s diverse interests and collaborative nature. the duo recruited visual support from chicago based graphic designer kevin mccaughey of nonporous for the distinct imagery of night gym. as well he designed the poster that comes in the 12- and screen printed a limited run of long sleeve t-shirts available through boot boys biz.

having repeatedly proven himself to be one of the uk s most innovative rising producers, impey returns with his debut ep, midnight in little havana , on the critically acclaimed astral black imprint. the release follows his bangclap single which comes off the back of two prolific years that have seen the 20 year old producer crafting soundscapes for viral campaigns for converse, securing a residency on nts, tearing up radio sets alongside the likes of faze miyake, and having the likes of skepta, trim, capo lee and rocks foe bless his instrumentals on sets from slimzee, dj maximum, kahn & neek, murlo and plastician. midnight in little havana sees impey serving up a diverse five track collection that showcase his versatile production skills drawing influence from grime, jersey club and vangelis-esque synthscapes. the ep is as much for the dance floor as it is the after hours bus home. at its centre is long time crowd favourite bleepz which finally sees its official release, having been a go-to track exclusively for djs such as boofy & hi5ghost and kromestar. the track is framed by 130bpm dance floor melters pep talk and pong song as well as showing impey s more intricate side through its title track and inner , both of which resemble astral black releases by the likes of drae da skimask and jaisu moreso than its club-focussed vinyl releases. midnight in little havana is presented visually with another stellar effort from astral black in-house designer oscar whale, the 12- being housed in a full colour sleeve depicting an illustration of miami s little havana strip, as detailed & nuanced as impey s productions. midnight in little havana is set for release on october 14th on 12- vinyl & digital via astral black.

steffen laschinskis project rising sun, which consists only of himself, was very productive since the release of the last album the lamentations of rising sun. in the past two years the musician and dj was a real demon of work and he loves to work in different genres and is he very diligent. his next ep series trilogy will be released in early october, comprising three vinyls. graphic designer and art director andreas haase from hamburg took care of the design. vinyl tastes better

reduced and methodical housey techno from this new anonymous project out of portugal. in the same lineage as early cabinet records or tobias freund under his tobias. moniker, the duo apply the detail-oriented approach of a sound designer to classic dancefloor forms, each cut matching techno sensibilities with a levity that can only come from a love for the giants of 90s us house. flat, impassive kicks get lifted by skippy hats and claps, dubby synth backdrops are punctured by dramatic stabs (note the chez n trent flashes on the b-side), and under it all roams an ever-restless (sub-)bass that reaches right into your guts. the name may be routine, the effect is anything but.
